Teaching
I teach podcasting, audio engineering, media production, and art classes in University and community settings. My CV, syllabi, and student work samples are available by request.
I am passionate about supporting students in creating dynamic, interdisciplinary work and developing unique expressive styles. I am in my element teaching foundational concepts, technical skills and critical frameworks. As a media artist and educator, I am concerned with representation and innovation as well as technical proficiency. I try to model these priorities for my students by designing courses that emphasize process, encourage playfulness, and embrace creative failures. My teaching is grounded in cooperation and feminist non-hierarchical organizing models. I strive to create a learning environment of authenticity, mutual respect, and generosity.
I believe media literacy is equally important in both producing and consuming art. In this era of increasingly available digital tools, it is important to me to teach analytical skills along with technical ones. I show my students how to identify and interrogate not only the literal messages of media, but also the more-subtle impacts of artistic choices. The concept of “Deep Listening,” as practiced by Pauline Oliveros, also influences my art and teaching. I believe the act of suspending judgement and listening keenly to our environments can train us to listen more receptively to each other and to be more aware of the aesthetic and cultural qualities of the art we produce and consume.
